If you read my blog, you know I am not fond of flying insects or crawling ones either. They freak me the heck out. I certainly don’t want my Summer ruined with those around. UGH.
We received the ThermaCELL Patio Lantern and are very pleased with not only the insects it keeps away from us, but the way it looks displayed on our patio!
We use ours by our hot tub, so that those pesky flying critters can’t or won’t come near us when we are trying to enjoy ourselves. This lantern is also great, not only because it is a nice touch to any deck but because it is DEET free!! Love the DEET free products out there now! Very cool 
How the ThermaCELL works (taken from their site):
ThermaCELL uses revolutionary, patented technology to dispense a small amount of repellent into the air over a long period of time. ThermaCELL is powered by a butane cartridge which provides the cordless, portable heat necessary to operate the device (batteries are not needed). It directs the heat to a metal grill. A mat saturated with Allethrin, a copy of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, is placed on top of the metal grill. The heat generated by the butane cartridge vaporizes the repellent allowing it to rise into the air, creating a 15 x 15 ft (225 sq ft) “Mosquito-Free-Zone” in minutes. The repellent is very unpleasant to mosquitoes, but when used as directed, will not harm humans or pets.
How do other mosquito repellent options compare?
-Direct contact repellents: sprays, lotions, and wrist bands can be messy and ineffective if not applied regularly. Plus chemicals applied to the skin can be harmful, especially on young children
-Large scale area repellents: mosquito magnets and zappers can be expensive, difficult to make work properly, and take weeks to get up and running.
-Portable area repellents are highly effective. ThermaCELL has both hand-held units and lanterns that create a 15×15 foot zone of protection.
This is also used by US troops for years, ThermaCELL products are popular throughout Europe and are gaining popularity in the Unites States, growing by double-digits last year!
We did notice the flying insects not interested in us when this was going. I love the option of using the lantern light (it requires 4 AA batteries not included) or you can shut off the lantern if during the day. This is great for camping, picnics or just being outdoors.
