Top Ten Reasons Why I Stop Reading A Blog

There are many and I mean MANY reasons why I will leave a blog as soon as I stumble on it. Below are 10 of my top most reasons for why I stop reading a blog and leave…

1. Small print… Please don’t have such tiny print that even a person using a magnifying glass won’t even be able to read it. There are blogs out there like this, trust me, I have seen them and never gone back.

2. Blogs with BLARING loud music…’nuff said

3. Dark blogs with dark lettering. Who can read that?

4. Blogs with so many ads and google ads that you don’t even know where their content starts and the ads end…. Hate that!!

5. Blogs that have content cut off of their pages or ads overlapping ads.. drives me nuts (by the way, does my header do that for you????)

6. 4560985430 hoops you have to jump through, just to leave a flippin’ comment.. turns me OFF

7. Blogs/sites that are super hard to navigate or find things on… I have been to many sites where I cannot find a THING that I am looking for, so I leave and don’t ever go back..

8. No pictures in blog posts. I love looking at pictures, so even if you are doing a blog post about what a bad day you had or whatever, post a picture! You can find free images at http://www.morguefile.com/

9. Uninteresting, boring headers/blog designs. Make them reflect you, but don’t make them so boring I want to cry…

10. Slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww loading sites… NEVER wait for them.. EVER.

So, what turns you off a blog or site?? What are your pet peeves? We all have them, so fess up! I want to know ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I’m with you, the music, it is the absolute worst. I won’t even read good friends blogs, if they have the autoplay on.

  2. I agree, all of these are annoyances. Another I personally don’t like is Disqus comment forms.

  3. Funny post! I agree with everything especially the whole music thing!!! really annoying ๐Ÿ™

  4. I love this! I am learning more tips too. Yes, I HATE when there are pop ups, hate it. And hovering over a post with your mouse and having those annoying pop up things because there is a link word in there, hate it. I am trying to get my header smaller, as it is kind of too big. Thanks for all the comments. It is always fun to tweek your blog and read what other people like or dislike on a blog. Helps you improve your blog!!

  5. I agree with a few of these, but the small print – I’ve found a way around it. Hit Ctrl and + together. It’s like magic!

Funny, just today I tweeted: If a lot of stuff bounces or slides around, flashes at me, pops up or pops down, I’m not going to read your blog.

There’s one blog I used to enjoy, but now she has a fast-flashing photo thing where she took photos of herself every day. Uh, no thank you. It could be different if the pictures were done with care and changed slowly.

And the comment thing? Geez! The blogs with giveaways that allow like 100 comments per person(10 for following this way, 10 for following that way, 5 for blah blah blah) and then they make you jump through tons of hoops per comment AND tell you to slow down, because you are posting too fast. Give me a break!

  6. Tamara B. says:

Perfect list and one I can’t stand is when they have a toolbar loaded at the bottom of their page and freezes my computer!

  7. Lauralee Hensley says:

Slow load times and if ads float across what I’m reading I leave.

  8. I agree with every single thing you said, but I have to admit – if there’s a giveaway for something I’m really excited about, I’ll stick around.

About headers and content crossing over each other – as the wife of a web designer, I know that Internet Explorer is notorious for displaying websites like this. Still IE is what most people use, so it does cause some headaches for designers (which most of us bloggers are not!)

Anyway, you said exactly what I’ve thought so many times. I just cross my fingers that no one hates things about my blog, lol!

  9. Music is a huge turn off for me, but worse are the new video ads that start playing automatically when you load the page. HUGE turn off and I can’t close out of the page fast enough. Oh, and popup survey requests. blah!

  10. G Bailey says:

    10, 10, 10, 10,10

  11. I have to agree with a lot of those reasons. Another thing that may make me leave is too many reviews with giveaways that I can’t actually leave a comment unless I wish to enter the giveaway. I don’t mind reviews, love to read/comment on them but I don’t always enter giveaways unless supporting my bloggy buds or I think I may use the item.

I have to agree with pictures, I realized the other month how much I LOVE blog posts with pictures and started using them .. then stopped. Glad I read this because it reminded me how much I LOVE seeing and using pics in blog posts!

  12. A lot of the same reasons you do is why I will leave a blog.
And no, your header dosent overlap. Everything looks great on your blog. simple, beautiful, easy to navigate. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Nancy Sue says:

Great list. Thank you for your post, especially helpful when planning my own blog (soon I hope). One thing I LOVE about your blog, is that you have your giveaway winners all in one place in a tab at the top. Some blogs make it challenging to find the winner of a giveaway when it’s posted on the original giveaway only, and then the original giveaway post works its way deep down in the blog postings ๐Ÿ™‚ We love your blog, Kim!

  14. Music is a definite turn off.

  15. I don’t like auto music either – or pop up ads. I don’t like white type on black backgrounds. I HATE text link ads within a post that when you hover they pop up – I’m always moving my mouse around a site, and that is soooo annoying.

  16. I feel the same way, especially the ads. I don’t want to have to weed through the ads to find any meat or substance to a site. I also don’t like busy backgrounds that distract from the blog ad what I’m suppose to be reading. Then there are the ones with the header that comes down half the screen and a banner ad that takes up most of the rest. I refuse to scroll down to be able to even see the title of the first post.

  17. thanks for the link for free images. this is one i struggle with when i don’t have my own photos.
i have my speakers off 90% of the time but when i have them on i often forget that some blogs haven’t realized music isn’t cool and i’ll get busted at work lol
as far as loading. i need to figure out how to improve my loading speed cuz mine is fairly slow.

  18. Music on blogs kills me!

  19. OK I think I turn you on instead of off. I don’t think I fall under any of those.

  20. great list, i like pics too and HATE auto music.

  21. Oh yes, the music thing is an automatic leave for me. I hate when it starts blaring and kids are napping. ugh!

  22. This is a great list and it pretty much sums it up on why you never visit a blog again.

  23. Yes, Yes, YES! Great post — I am particularly aggressive when a blog has music. Scares me every stinkin’ time when it starts AND it slows things down.

  24. Great list! I agree with all of them.

(and yes, the header does run off – for me at least)

  25. 3 and 9 are major annoyances. Great post!

  26. Good list, I agree. Especially with the too many ads thingโ€ฆso frustrating.

And if music starts when I come to a site, I leave right away. The blog owner may like it, but that doesn’t mean visitors do (and it slows down the load time a LOT)
