IBW (Interactive Book-Webscene) Review & Giveaway!!!

CONTEST OVER! CONGRATS TO SHANNON GALLAGHER, COMMENT #12!!!

IBW

I found this really neat website online about IBW Books (Interactive Book-Webscene) and was intrigued and wanted to review them with my children. So I contacted IBW books and they agreed to let me review for them.

When they came in the mail, I was very surprised to see how thin they were! They are paperback, which makes them alot thinner. The IBW titles create a new kind of reading experience for you and your children, using a new storytelling process that combines a print book with the interactivity of multimedia components. At the end of each chapter, you are directed to a weblink, called a webscene. Going to the webscene, you find an animation and some other things, that is an integral part of the storytelling process. After viewing the webscene, you return to read more of the book, visit more webscenes and do it again!

Me and my three year old received some books to review. We sat down and tried one out. My son did not understand at first why Mommy was reading to him by the computer, lol! But, at the end of the first chapter, he was excited to see the animated scene on the computer and he attention span increased because of this. For my son, he was interested in the whole story, not just parts. Having the animated scenes after each chapter really captivated him, and made him want to listen and see what happened next. These really turned out to be a great thing for us. Normally, when I read a book to my kids, they will listen for about 4-5 minutes tops, then they are running around looking for a new book for me to read, sigh, so this was great. I can’t say that I was not skeptical of these books, but they proved to be wonderful in terms of keeping my boy interested in me reading to him!

Pros: Light weight, simple books. Easy to read and really fun when you reach the end of a chapter and get to follow a link on the computer for some online interaction. They are also very inexpensive! Would make a wonderful stocking stuffer or gift for your children.

Cons: They get lost really easy if your 3 year old takes off with them and puts them somewhere “special” LOL. I keep asking him where they are and he keeps saying “they are in with my special things”. So, when I find them again, I will definitely be reading some more to him.

IBW Series (taken off their site):

  • Busy Preschoolers, which teaches 105 learning skills, including reading readiness, listening and sequencing, motor skills, and social-emotional development.
  • KA Readers entertain beginning readers with word-pattern-based storylines that build upon phonics-based reading instruction. English and Spanish text, along with ESL lessons and activities, support English Language Learners in development of vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Earth Academy 7 storylines follow the adventures of three space-alien exchange students as they attend school on Earth. Every book is new exploration of Earth’s science and history from a space alien point of view

Just a tease, I mean taste of what IBW is:

Want a taste of the IBW experience? In the beginning reader, Don’t Frown, Clown!, three mice try to cheer up their sad friend by doing circus tricks. After reading chapter four of the book, you would turn on your computer’s sound and go online to www.ka-reader.com/9-4/.
