How to Make Your Pool Area More Interesting

If you just bought a pool, chances are you want to start spending some more time in and around it. To that end, you’ll need to make your backyard interesting. Fireplaces, gnomes, and outdoor kitchens are all great, but this article concerns itself with those decorations that can be implemented on your deck and around your pool. There are plenty of ways to make your pool area more interesting. I have included several ideas below!

Landscaping Ideas for Your Pool Area

Here are four big categories of outdoor decorations that you can easily include on and around your pool. Dive into these ideas and implement what you want to spice up your backyard.

Lighting

If you’re looking for cost-effective ambiance and safety, you can do a ton with outdoor lighting. Outdoor pool lighting can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances the ambiance of your backyard and pool area. Consider installing string lights or lanterns in trees or on pergolas to create a cozy and intimate space.

Beyond that, outdoor lighting can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances the ambiance of your backyard and pool area. Consider installing string lights or lanterns in trees or on pergolas to create a cozy and intimate space. They also go great around a pool!

Nowadays, smart lighting is ubiquitous. You can change the color and turn off these lights from your phone, even if you’re not home. Low-voltage lighting and outdoor-rated fixtures are your friends. If you’re in doubt, contact a local electrician – especially if the wiring situation gets messy.

Plants

There are a ton of benefits of plants in your backyard. They add color, texture, and visual interest to your pool area, enhancing its overall appearance, while also improving air quality, and property value, and even attracting butterflies! If your plants are big enough, they can provide privacy and shade, making your pool area more of an oasis.

Here are some ideas for incorporating plants into your pool area:

  • Container gardens – Plant colorful flowers and foliage in large, decorative containers and arrange them around the pool deck.
  • Raised garden beds – Build raised garden beds along the perimeter of the pool area and fill them with herbs, vegetables, or flowers.
  • Trellises – Install trellises along the fence line and plant climbing vines or flowers for a vertical garden.
  • Water features – Incorporate water features like fountains, ponds, or waterfalls into your pool area, and surround them with aquatic plants like water lilies or lotus flowers.
  • Shade trees – Plant trees around the pool area to provide natural shade and visual interest. Choose trees that are appropriate for your climate and won’t drop excessive leaves or debris in the pool.
  • Tropical plants – Create a lush, tropical atmosphere by planting palms, hibiscus, and other exotic plants around the pool.

Tiles

Pool tiles are awesome for personalization because they come in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures. Choose tiles that complement the style of your home and landscape, or opt for a bold and eye-catching design that stands out.

They can go on the interior surface of your pool and on the surrounding deck, steps, and other areas. Best of all, pool tiles are easy to clean and resistant to staining from pool chemicals. All you have to do is occasionally apply a mild cleaning solution and brush.

Outdoor Furniture

To make your pool area more inviting and comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, you’ll need to have somewhere to sit. Poolside furniture, whether it’s wood or wicker, or steel, helps enhance appearance and functionality.

Family and guests can sit while they’re not swimming, read by the pool, or just relax and socialize. Choosing the right furniture helps to create a cohesive and stylish look that compliments the architecture and landscaping of your home while reflecting your personal taste.

Consider your space and budget – a spacious sectional for lounging on a big deck or a compact bistro set for intimate conversations and late-night dinners. Be sure to look for weather-resistant materials for both the frame and the cushions of your outdoor furniture.

What type of pool you should pick based on appearance

Are you daydreaming about decorating your backyard and implementing these pool design ideas, but you don’t actually own a pool yet? If you’re looking to add an in-ground pool to your property, it’s worth knowing how different types of pools vary concerning material and appearance.

Vinyl

The cheapest option, vinyl pools, have a vinyl liner that is stretched over a frame made of steel, aluminum, or composite materials. The liner can come in a variety of colors and patterns and can be customized to achieve a specific look. However, vinyl liners tend to have a somewhat uniform appearance and may not have the same level of texture or depth as other materials.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass pools are made of preformed shells that are manufactured in a factory and then transported to the site for installation. These shells have a smooth, glossy finish and can come in a variety of colors and shapes. The smooth finish of fiberglass gives the pool a sleek, modern appearance.

Concrete

The most expensive option, concrete pools, is constructed by pouring concrete into a form or excavated area and then finishing it with a surface material such as plaster or tiles. The finish can be customized however you like, from a simple, classic white plaster to a more ornate tile pattern. Concrete pools also offer the greatest degree of flexibility in terms of shape and size, which can allow for more creative design options. The texture and depth of a concrete pool finish can also be varied to achieve a more natural or freeform shape and aesthetic.

At The End of The Day, it’s Your Backyard…

Your backyard along with all the stuff in it is an opportunity to showcase your personality and artistic sensibilities. The most important piece of advice is to do it for you. Don’t decorate performatively or consider too much what other people would think – it’s your backyard! You’re the one who will be spending time there, enjoying your patio, pool, and decorations. So go with what excites you, and stimulates you. What you think is the best is the best.
