Keeping My Family Safe From Burglaries
I remember when my boy was only 1 years old and I was pregnant with my daughter. I was home all alone (hubs works swing shift) and I was in bed trying to fall asleep. I had my alarm on and we even have the home security signs in our yard, so I felt safe…
I woke up to a LOUD slam and crack. I jumped out of bed and looked out my window to see our backyard gate wide open. We ALWAYS keep it closed and locked from the other side. So, I was pretty hysterical when I saw that and SCARED!!
I ran to my sons room to make sure he was okay, which he was, and then I called 911. By the time the operator answered I could barely talk! With pregnancy hormones running through me and thinking the worst (a predator was in my backyard!!) I could not talk very well.
The operator was getting a bit irate with me because all I was doing was crying and mumbling, LOL. Finally she calmed me down to figure out why I was so upset in the first place. I told her the story and immediately the cops were dispatched to my home.
They showed up really quickly and they had a K9 doggy with them to sniff around my home. They came up empty-handed! Ugh. They searched around the neighborhood and then came back to my home to tell me they did not find anyone and that all was okay. I thanked them, closed the door and turned my alarm back on. Then I grabbed my baby boy and we locked my bedroom door and fell asleep in my bed.
I HATED that feeling of NOT knowing if someone was in my backyard or breaking into my home! I felt sooo helpless. I NEVER want to feel like that again, ever. Yes, we do have guns in our home and YES I DO believe in using them (and I know how..), so I felt safe with that, but STILL. There is soo many crazies in this world, you can NEVER be too safe. The moment you feel like you are safe and let your guard down, THAT is when something horrible will happen. Sucks, but it is so true.
So, I keep my family safe by having a complete alarm system, to ensure no wackos will be entering or trying to enter anytime soon. I also own a gun (and don’t you worry, it is LOCKED up and put away from my babies), so that helps me feel safe too. My kids also know how to dial 911, know our address and all that good stuff. I also talk to my kids all the time about how to be safe and what to do if there is an emergency or a break-in.
Every person is DIFFERENT from how they protect their home and their family. I encourage you all to take extra care when protecting your homes from burglars.

My house did get broken into when we were home, thank goodness my husband had gotten off work early that evening. They came in through the back sliding glass door and slipped right back through it stealing a 47 inch flat screen tv. They were so quite that the dogs didn’t even hear them. 911 operator was even worse she freaked out on me saying ” Oh My gosh” aren’t they the ones that are supposes to be calm. cops came traced a scent with the dog and lost it. Never found the person who did and basically that was it. So now I have every single window and door locked everytime I leave and go to bed. There is also a stick in the sliding glass door. It was the worse experience in my life I still have posttraumatic from it and its been almost 2 years since it happend I have to keep the tv on and some lights when I go to bed. Which is better than it used to be when I had to have every single light in the house on to feel somewhat safe.
