How To Keep Halloween Safe And Fun
Here are just a few tips to keep in mind this October 31st!
Make Sure Costumes Are Safe
Part of the fun of Halloween is being able to dress up in a scary costume, but even that can be risky for very small children. Costumes that are too long can turn into tripping hazards, and some may be hard to see at night.
If your children are going to wear costumes, make sure that they fit properly and that your children won’t trip over them. They should also be flame-resistant and not include accessories that may be dangerous in the wrong hands.
Toy swords and canes are fine, but they shouldn’t be heavy or sharp enough to actually hurt someone. Finally, make sure that your children’s costumes can be seen clearly at night.
If they’re too dark to see clearly at night, add some reflective elements or have your children carry brightly colored or reflective bags for their candy.
Trick-Or-Treat Safety

If you have young children who want to go trick-or-treating, go with them. If you’re uncomfortable with having your young children out after dark, check to see if there are any Halloween events near you that would be safer.
Otherwise, keep the trick-or-treating to the early evening while there may still be some daylight. Older children can go out without you, but they should never go alone.
Make sure that they go in a group and encourage them to stick together. They should always cross streets at crosswalks in groups, and they should stick to sidewalks whenever possible.
More child pedestrian injuries occur on Halloween than on any other night of the year, so teach your children to stay alert and be aware of traffic at all times. Finally, children should never go into a stranger’s home or vehicle for a treat. Stick to just going door-to-door for candy.
Keeping Your Home Safe
While keeping your children safe on Halloween night will understandably be your top priority, you should keep your own home safe if you’re going to give out treats.
Make sure the front of your home is well lit and free of anything that could be a tripping hazard. Rake wet leaves away from your front door to keep anyone from slipping and keep pets inside or tied up away from trick-or-treaters. As a homeowner, you have a duty of care to remove hazards and provide a safe place for visitors.
By planning ahead and taking a few precautions, you can assure you, your children, your friends and neighbors can all have a safe Halloween.
