The weather is slowly getting colder, so I wanted to share a simple, step-by-step farmhouse ceiling fan reset for a cozier home this fall! Since fall is officially here, the air definitely has that cold chill.
Because of that, the warm, fuzzy blankets have come out of hiding, firewood is brought in (or pellets for your pellet stove ;)), and cozy scented candles are being lit to create a warm, homier atmosphere. Yet one cozy helper often gets forgotten and overlooked… It is the beautiful farmhouse ceiling fan right above your head!
With a few small tweaks, your fan can make your home feel warmer, cozier, and way more inviting! Below, you will find an easy reset plan for your ceiling fan that you can finish in one weekend!

5 Steps To A Farmhouse Ceiling Fan Reset For A Cozier Home This Fall
Many people think ceiling fans are only for the summer. But, that is not true! Warm air rises, so heat from your fireplace, pellet stove, or furnace often hangs out near the ceiling. Meanwhile, your just absolutely freezing! You have heat all around you, but is just isn’t where it needs to be!
A ceiling fan that is set the right way will help push all that warm air above you, back down to you. As a result, the room feels evenly warm and comfy. And, because of this, you could be saving some money each month on heating because you won’t have to raise the thermostat as much.
Step 1: Dust Off Those Blades!
Before anything else, grab a soft cloth. Fans collect dust all summer long when the fan turns out that dust floats onto your furniture and everywhere else.
Make sure the fan is off and stopped and grab a soft cloth or one of those ceiling fan dusters that have a long handle. If needed, use a sturdy step stool, and ask a helper to hold it steady.
Next, wipe each blade gently. Also, wipe the light glass if your fan has one. This only takes a few minutes. Afterward, the room feels fresher right away and a little bit brighter.
Step 2: Pick A Fan That Fits Your Style
Your fan hangs right in the middle of the room. So it should match your decor. If you love wood tones, black metal, and a warm country feel, browse farmhouse ceiling fans from Hunter Fan . The collection mixes wood-tone blades with matte and metal finishes.
Some models have lights. Others come with remotes. Several are even rated for covered porches. That gives you plenty of choices for a kitchen, a bedroom, or a patio. Take your time and compare a few finishes. Look at how each one sits next to your walls, furniture, and floors.
Step 3: Get The Right Size Of Fan!
A ceiling fan that is too small will not move enough air around to make a difference. One that is too big can feel crowded and just too powerful it becomes annoying. So, as a rule, small bedrooms and entryways do well with fans from 36 to 44 inches. Larger living rooms often need 52 inches or more.
Also, check your ceiling height. The lowest blade should hang at least 7′ above the floor. Low ceilings work best with low-profile fans that don’t hang down as much.
Ceilings that are 8′ and higher can handle a downrod. Not sure about your room size? Measure the floor, then check the fan’s details. Most product pages list the room size it suits.
Step 4: Add The Fan To Your Decor Plan
Fall projects can pile up fast. That is why a plan helps. Some people start in September and finish in December. If you follow a decorating timeline , add your fan to it.
Early fall is a smart time for the job because the weather is still fairly mild, and your holiday guests are not there yet. Later on closer to the holidays, you can focus on the decorating. For now though, do the things like installing your ceiling fan a priority. Then, when the busy season arrives, the big task is already done and you will feel so relieved!
Color matters too. A black fan looks bold against white walls or brick. A fan with warm wood blades feels softer next to a reclaimed wood farmhouse table.
So, pick one look and repeat it! For example, match the fan finish to your cabinet handles or light fixtures. This keeps the room calm, neat and tidy.
Do Not Forget The Light!
Cozy rooms need soft light. Fall days get short and darkness comes sooner, so your fan light will work harder! Choose a fan with a dimmable LED light if you can.
Then you can keep it bright for homework or content creation and dim it down for a scary movie night! Warm light also makes wood and metal finishes glow. So, it adds to the farmhouse feel you are going for, even more!

Step 5: Don’t Forget To Flip That Switch!
This is the most important step! When your heat comes on for the first time in months, change your ceiling fans direction! Set it to spin clockwise on low speed.
The blades then create a gentle updraft which pulls all the cool air up and then pushes warm air near the ceiling, back down along the walls and back to you. You will want to keep the ceiling fan speed on low because a fast fan speed will feel like a cold breeze. It only takes a minute to do.
Here is how to change your ceiling fans direction:
- First, turn the fan off and wait for the blades to completely stop.
- Second, find the small switch on the motor housing. If you have a remote, look for a reverse button instead.
- Third, flip the switch (or just press the reverse button on remote).
- Finally, turn the fan on low and stand underneath! If you feel a breeze, it is still in summer mode. If you do not feel a breeze, you are set for winter! Yay!!!
Helpful Tip: Some low-profile fans do not have a reverse switch. So check the product details before you buy it! That way, your new fan can work all year long.
A Cozier Home Starts Overhead
Your ceiling fan reset for fall and winter doesn’t need to be difficult. Just start with a clean fan or if you don’t have a ceiling fan, pick a style you love, and reverse the direction of the fan to help bring down your heat to keep your home cozy! Add this super quick job to your fall checklist and do it sooner rather than later, so it doesn’t get missed.
Small things like this really make a difference! Soon, your home will feel warmer, cozier, and look more inviting! Plus, it may just cost you less to heat your home in the long run! And that is probably one of my favorite reasons to do this each fall 🙂
