We went to see The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants in the theater back in December, and we loved it! This is exactly the kind of silly, feel-good adventure you expect from Bikini Bottom, but with a spooky twist that keeps things fresh.
This time around, SpongeBob is determined to prove he’s a “big guy” by earning his swashbuckling certificate. Of course, nothing goes as planned, and a trick by the Flying Dutchman sends SpongeBob and Patrick straight into an eerie underworld adventure!

The movie is packed with classic SpongeBob humor, goofy misunderstandings, and that lovable optimism SpongeBob brings to every situation.
The underworld setting adds a darker, more mysterious vibe, but it’s never scary in a way that feels too intense for kids. At its heart, the movie is about courage, friendship, and learning that being brave doesn’t mean doing everything alone.
Fans of the series will love hearing familiar voices again, and the animation is bright, detailed, and super fun to watch. Patrick is peak Patrick, SpongeBob is endlessly positive, and the Flying Dutchman steals every scene he’s in. It’s fast-paced, funny, and easy to enjoy whether you’re watching with kids or feeling nostalgic as an adult.
One of the best extras is the bonus content included with the digital release. There are over 20 minutes of featurettes that give a behind-the-scenes look at how the movie was made, including voice recordings with both returning and new cast members, plus a cool breakdown of how the underworld was created. The Ice Spice “Big Guy” music video is a fun bonus that adds a modern pop moment to the SpongeBob universe!
It’s a great pick for family movie night, longtime SpongeBob fans, or anyone who just wants something light, funny, and full of heart.
