Home remedies

While it’s always important to take your kids to the doctors when they’re feeling really unwell, lots of childhood illnesses can be managed at home with some good old-fashioned remedies. Even if you don’t know how to tackle a particular condition, learning how to treat pink eye and the best ways to soothe a sore throat will come in handy should these illnesses crop up. Usually, they don’t require more than a warm compress or some tea with lemon and honey, but if you have any doubts, ask your local pharmacist to recommend some suitable treatments.

Comfort

One of the hardest parts about being unwell is the discomfort, especially for children who aren’t used to being bedridden. Make sure they have everything they need to feel better, like blankets, cushions, and their beloved cuddly toys. If they’re curled up because of a bad cold or the flu, there’s no reason you can’t put some cartoons on the TV to keep their minds off the illness that’s bothering them.

Treats

While giving your child some of their favorite chocolates probably isn’t the best idea if they have a stomach bug, try to think of ways to make them feel a little bit special when they’re missing out on school. If they’ve been in bed for quite a few days, they’re not only feeling down because they’re unwell, but also because they’ve missed out on seeing all their friends. Treats could include having more screen time than they’re usually allowed or even receiving a new toy or hot water bottle to comfort them during this difficult time.

Spend time with them

Your kids might not get the luxury of spending a whole day with you very often, so be sure to show them that you’re there for them in every way you can. While it might be tempting to catch up on some housework, sitting next to your child will bring them a sense of peace. Of course, they do need plenty of time to rest and sleep as well, so you can go ahead and prepare food for them or complete other tasks while they’re resting.

Trip to the doctor

No child likes visiting the doctor, but if a bit of rest and home remedies aren’t doing the trick, it’s time to call in a professional. Sometimes harmless infections end up being a bit more stubborn than you’d first thought. For example, coughs could turn into chest infections and require antibiotics. It’s always best to check with your local healthcare center if something feels off.
