You can help save energy in your home in many different ways. This article will discuss 7 Energy-Saving Hacks for A More Sustainable Home. Things are costly and prices are rising like crazy! I don’t really see it stopping anytime soon.
I know we have suffered a bit from all the high prices. It really sucks! So, it is becoming more and more important to look for ways you can save money.
One of those ways is by using energy-saving hacks for your home. We are implementing these tips as soon as possible and some, we already have. We recently got a solar panel generator to use, so hopefully that will help save on some costs and energy too.
It is also very important (to my family at least) to lessen our carbon footprint. As the world faces the challenges of climate change, it is more important than ever to take steps to reduce our carbon footprint and live sustainably. One of the best places to start is in the home.
There are many energy-saving hacks that can be implemented to make our homes more sustainable and reduce our energy consumption and costs. These hacks not only help to reduce our carbon footprint but also save us money on our energy bills. It is a win/win, right? I think so!
Energy-Saving Hacks for A More Sustainable Home
Below, you will find some energy-saving hacks for a more sustainable home (and to save you some money!):
1. Use energy-efficient lighting
One of the simplest ways to save energy in your home is by using energy-efficient lighting. Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-saving LED bulbs. LED bulbs use about 75% less energy than regular bulbs and last up to 25 times longer.
This not only saves energy but also reduces the need to replace bulbs frequently, reducing waste in landfills. Also, they give your room a more cozy mood, and when I am in a cozy mood I love playing fun online games on my phone while laying on my bed (you can check out a game I enjoy and play here).
2. Smart Thermostats
A smart thermostat is a device that is enabled by Wi-Fi (it can be used without Wi-Fi, but it will be limited on what you can do). You can easily adjust the temperature in your home, even when you are far away. Because of this, you are able to control the temp in your home at any time.
If you are going to be gone, you can adjust the temp lower. If you are going to be arriving home soon, you can turn up the heat or the A/C before you get home for ultimate comfort.
This not only saves you money because you won’t be running your heat or A/C all the time but also will help to conserve energy. It will also allow you to learn your heating and cooling preferences over time by continuously using the smart device.
3. Take care of any drafts coming into your home
When we moved into our home, there was A LOT wrong with it. There were SO many air leaks and drafts it was ridiculous! Our heating bill was SO much each month because of that.
Since then, we have tried to seal up and take care of any draft areas around doors and windows. Since doing that, our heating bill has gone down.
This is one thing you want to take care of ASAP. This is one of the biggest ways to cut down on costs because they are a major source of energy loss in the home.
4. Make sure your home is insulated really well
Insulating your home can help to reduce energy loss and improve energy efficiency. This can help with energy savings over time and help you save money in the long run because you won’t have to constantly be turning on your heat (which I am guilty of!) or using your air conditioner all the time.
This is kind of like what I explained above about taking care of any drafts coming into your home. Similar, but not quite the same thing but should be taken care of as soon as you are able to do it.
5. Ventilation
Opening a window and allowing the outside air to come into your home, will help to reduce the need for air conditioning in your home.
This not only saves energy because you are not using your air conditioner but also provides a natural and healthy indoor environment. Every day that is sunny in the spring, summer, and fall months, I will open a few windows in our home.
I absolutely LOVE fresh air and welcome it all the time in our home! Especially after our LONG and COLD winters that we have (and are STILL having!!). I can’t WAIT for summer…
6. Natural lighting? Yes, please!
Using natural lighting can help to reduce the need for using lights during the day, in your home. I am SUPER guilty of not doing this as often as I should be!
I like to have a certain lamp on every day, even in the daytime. Our home doesn’t have enough windows in my opinion, so I use a lamp to help brighten my home during the day when I probably shouldn’t! By using natural light during the daylight hours you will save energy and in turn, your costs each month will go down some.
Open those dang curtains and blinds and allow that gorgeous, natural light into your home. Plus, it is good for your soul and health!
7. Unplugging
Power strips can be used to turn off a bunch of electronics and appliances at one time when they are not in use. This not only saves you time from having to unplug EVERYTHING but also saves energy and reduces standby power consumption. I try to unplug everything the moment I am done using it.
I have always done this and made it a habit. Now my kids do this too! It is an easy way to conserve energy and lower your electricity bill a tiny bit.
8. Low-flow fixtures
Low-flow fixtures, such as showerheads, toilets, and faucets, can help to reduce water consumption in the home. This not only saves water but also reduces the energy needed to heat the water.
Look for fixtures with the WaterSense label, which indicates that they meet water efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We don’t have any low-flow fixtures but we might invest in some in the future.
9. Appliances
Using appliances like energy-efficient ones can help to reduce energy usage in your home. ENERGY STAR appliances are a great option because they meet energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
However, any new appliance can help you save more energy and lower your costs because they are new and in great shape. Older appliances tend to use more energy.
I know this first hand because we have a dryer that I have to run AT LEAST 2 times to get our clothes dried! And, I do A LOT of laundry each week! When we can afford a new dryer, you better believe I will be buying one! I am so sick of drying my clothes ALL. DAY. LONG.
By implementing these energy-saving hacks, you can create a more sustainable home, reduce your environmental impact, and save on your energy bills.
