Ever wish that when you saw the engine light go on your dash, you knew exactly what it meant? Well, now you can know and it is easier than you think! It is with a little device called CarMD. Saves you time and saves you money!
What is CarMD? (taken off their site):
It is a handheld tester device. You can use the tester to monitor and maintain the health of your 1996 and newer car, light truck, minivan, and/or SUV for the life of your vehicle. The red, yellow and green indicator lights help you instantly diagnose the health of your, your family’s, even your neighbor’s vehicles. For example, CarMD can help you to:
Examine a used car before buying
The green, yellow and red lights on the CarMD tester can tell you if the used car you’re considering is jewel, a possible lemon, or a big red flag. Give your vehicle a clean bill of health before road trips Again, watch the lights. Green = go, Yellow = proceed with caution, Red = consult your mechanic.
Pre-“smog” test your car Yellow or red lights mean you may not pass a state emissions test. Be sure to consult your mechanic.
I was so excited when I was sent a testing device unit to review. I think that every woman, man and teenage driver should have one of these with her/him, either in your car or in your purse/back pack when she/he is driving. Who wants to break down, with little kids in the backseat? No fun, but even more NO FUN with little ones whinning in the back seat! Trust me when I say I KNOW!! Who wants to break down ever?! Not me! Now, since this device is for cars 1996 and above, my wonderful vehicle does not get to use this wonderful device.
But, my husband certainly grabbed this up and is using it for his Dodge Truck. It was quite interesting that we received this to test, because my husbands truck was having some “engine light” problems, and he was having a hard time figuring out why that light kept going on (and YES, he is mechanically inclined, totally). He loves gadgets so this is his new bestfriend! He is still playing around with it, but found out that the engine light was just that, an engine light and he shut it off manually. So, problem solved there! Now, if my husband was not
mechanically inclined and did not have this device, we may have taken in his truck and spent money we don’t have just to have the mechanic say it was just the light! Ughh! So, for that, we are happy and thankful! Truly one of the best auto investments you can make!

About the company (taken off their site):
Our Mission
The mission of CarMD.com is to empower consumers by providing them with the tools and information they need to make educated decisions about their vehicle’s health and maintenance.
Our Vision and History
The vision began in 1997 with a conversation between automotive aftermarket industry veteran Ieon C. Chen and ASE Master Technician Keith Andreasen, both of Innova Electronics Corp., a leading developer of test equipment for the automotive aftermarket. They shared a dream to provide consumers with a way to diagnose their vehicle’s “Check Engine” light as easily as you might check your tire pressure and oil levels.
With this goal in mind, they began researching and developing a product that could diagnose a vehicle’s health gaining access to a vehicle’s computer and processing it in much the same way a mechanic with years of experience does.
In late 2001, the company launched INNOVA® 3100 OBD2 Code Reader, which would quickly become the best-selling automotive diagnostic tool of its kind and eventually be re-mastered into the CarMD tester. In 2003, the “CarMD” name was registered with the U.S. Patent and
Trademark office, and the first of several U.S. Patents on the tool and information were granted. Meanwhile, with the proliferation of the Internet, the company’s vision expanded to include the creation of an online resource where consumers can quickly and easily learn about the vehicles they depend upon everyday.
By 2004, a team of ASE Certified technicians, master technicians, computer software engineers, consultants and associate repair shops were completing a database that would “consumerize” the information that previously only mechanics could understand.
Today, the CarMD handheld tester and database are re-shaping the way consumers diagnose their vehicles’ health and letting you take charge of the life of your car.
