This post is about Overlooked Reasons To Give Up Smoking. Many of us are addicted to one thing or another. There are those of us who get sugar cravings. Some of us are a little too attached to our phones. And then there are those of us who smoke. Addictions are rarely good for us and this is especially true when it comes to smoking.
You will know the dangers already, of course, as they are blatantly listed front and center on the cigarette packet. Cancer, heart disease, and emphysema are just a few of the health conditions that are linked to the smoking habit, and then there are dental and skin consequences too.
Reduce the risk of health conditions
We have already listed some of the health conditions that may be brought about by smoking but there are lots of others too.
Cigarettes can raise the risk of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, for example, a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause tissue damage in the body.
Smoking is also said to be a trigger for Hidradenitis Suppurativa which is an uncomfortable skin condition that inflicts many. Hidradenitis Suppurativa scalp lesions are one consequence of the condition but other areas of the skin can be affected too.
These are just two of the health issues that smoking can trigger but a quick search on Google and a chat with your doctor will highlight more, some of which may be new to you. To maintain good health, give up your smoking habit at your earliest opportunity.
You will sleep better
There are lots of reasons for a bad night’s sleep, some of which can be health-related. Smoking is another factor as nicotine withdrawal at night can cause us to feel restless. You will know this yourself if your sleep has ever been disturbed because of your craving for a cigarette.
If you have then gone about your day feeling tired and grumpy, you will understand the problems that your nighttime craving has caused.
But if you can resist the urge to smoke after your head has hit the pillow, you will be able to sleep better and go about your day with more energy and patience. Good news for you and good news for the people around you.
You will have more dining options
Many restaurants and bars are now smoke-free. This is obviously a good thing, especially for those who don’t want to be affected by passive smoking, but not good for those who are trying to find a place that accommodates smokers.
So, if you have ever struggled to get a table because of your smoking habit, you will naturally have more choices if you kick the habit.
You won’t be forced to eat or drink in places that might not be to your liking. And you won’t need to leave the table mid-meal to go and smoke outside in the cold!
You will be a good role model
Smoking isn’t only bad for you. It’s also bad for the people around you. And we aren’t only talking about those who might be affected via passive smoking. If you regularly smoke, you might encourage others to start the habit.
It could be people in your family, your friends, or the people you socialize with at work. You might also lure past smokers back into the habit by the sight and smell of your cigarette! So, don’t only think about your needs. Think about the needs of others too.
Don’t smoke near them for starters, as the dangers of passive smoking are real. And don’t encourage them to start or renew a habit that they will later regret. Instead, do what you can to give up. By doing so, you might even role model to other smokers that giving up is possible!
You will save a lot of money
What are your saving goals? Perhaps you want to go away on vacation. Or you might want a brand-new car. You might also be keen on saving money for the needs of your family, such as a college fund for your children when they come of age. Such saving goals will be less achievable if you spend a lot of money on your smoking habit.
So, do the maths. Work out what you spend on smoking each week and multiply that to come to a monthly or yearly calculation.
Then consider how that money could be better used! You will get nearer to all of your saving goals if you kick the habit and you will have more money for your monthly bills and other essentials too.
You will protect your home from damage
Cigarettes don’t only cause yellow stains on your fingers. The smoke from your cigarettes can create yellow stains on your walls too! This is less of a problem if yellow is your chosen aesthetic but if you are going for a different colored design, your home won’t match your tastes anymore.
Of course, yellow stains are only a superficial problem. There’s another, more serious reason to give up smoking when relating it to your home.
According to statistics, smoking is a leading cause of house fires in the US. For the safety of yourself and your family then, you will understand the importance of giving up the habit. You will also protect your home and all of the various contents that lie within it.
You will smell better
Cigarettes can affect both your breath and the clothes that you wear. You might not notice the smell but others certainly will. They may be too polite to tell you but it’s worth knowing that you might not be as fragrant as you thought you were.
You might assume this is a less important reason to give up smoking but consider how it might affect you at job interviews, client meetings, and social situations.
You want people to be drawn in by you and not repelled, so you are doing yourself (and them) a favor if you stop smoking.
It Isn’t Easy!
Giving up smoking isn’t easy, we know. However, it is possible. Talk to your doctor about medications and other solutions to the problem and consider alternatives to smoking to help you kick the habit.
The sooner you do the sooner you will experience the benefits that await you, such as those that are related to your health chances.
