In this post, we will discuss 10 ways to save money on everyday expenses. Managing everyday expenses has become more challenging for many Americans, including myself!
As of writing this article, the annual inflation rate in the US stood at 3.1 percent. This ongoing trend underscores the importance of finding effective ways to save money daily.
The average cost of living for a single person is now $3,693 per month. Isn’t that absolutely insane?! How are people supposed to live? But, even small adjustments in your expenses can make a huge difference in your finances.
10 Ways To Save Money on Everyday Expenses
Below are some really helpful Ways To Save Money on Everyday Expenses. I hope my list can help at least a few people! Let’s get to it!
Tips for Saving Money on Daily Expenses
We will talk about some tried-and-true methods that actually work, to help you keep more money in your pocket:
1. Embrace meal planning and home cooking
Cooking at home is much cheaper than dining out or ordering takeout. Planning your weekly meals allows you to buy groceries in bulk, often at a discount. Not only does meal planning save money, but it also encourages healthier eating habits.
We live out in the middle of nowhere, literally, so I have to cook homemade meals every night! No more fast food for this family unless we want to drive about an hour and a half to the nearest fast-food joint. No thanks! It motivates me to learn new recipes and cook healthier for my family. I have saved quite a bit of money doing this since 2016.
You can start with simple recipes to build your confidence in the kitchen (look up recipe blogs to inspire you), and hopefully, soon, you will see the money you are saving from going out and eating or getting fast food, building up in your savings account.
2. Master the art of couponing
Coupons are not just for the highly frugal. They are a cost-effective strategy for anyone looking to cut groceries and household items costs. Digital couponing has made this easier, with numerous apps (and there are SO many savings apps and coupon apps) and websites dedicated to providing the latest deals.
Before shopping, spend a few minutes looking for relevant coupons–it’s like finding free money literally. You can also sign up for cash back from shopping online or in-person stores. Just Google it! I use one I love, all the time. If you’re shopping online, check if there are promo or discount codes that you can apply to lessen your total.
3. Switch to generic brands
Brand loyalty can be expensive. Generic brands often offer the same quality at a fraction of the price. This is especially true for medication, pantry staples, and cleaning supplies.
We use the store brand products all the time and think they are just as good as the top name brands out there. I have tested a few of them and they are just the same most of the time! Try experimenting by substituting a few brand-name items with their generic counterparts and see how much money you can save from this simple money-saving idea.
4. Cut down on energy costs
Reducing your home energy use is a win-win for your wallet and the environment. Simple adjustments like sealing windows, using energy-efficient appliances, and turning off lights when not in use can significantly lower monthly utility bills.
Also, consider a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to reduce heating and cooling expenses while maintaining your home’s optimal temperature.
Since doing most of these things I have cut the cost of my electricity bill in half from this time last year. It is an eye-opener for sure and a great way to save some money.
5. Rethink your transportation options
Opt for public transportation, biking, or walking instead of driving if possible. Not only does this save on gas, parking, and maintenance costs, but it also promotes a healthier lifestyle. For those who need a vehicle, carpooling or ridesharing can offer savings on daily commutes.
This is a great option for those of you who live in a big city. I know this seems like a dumb thing to bring up, but some people don’t realize how much money you can save by taking a bus or biking!
6. Cancel unnecessary subscriptions
Do an inventory of your monthly subscriptions and memberships. Streaming services, magazines, and gym memberships can add up quickly. If there are services you rarely use, consider canceling them or switching to a cheaper alternative.
Many platforms offer family or group plans, which can be more cost-effective. For example, a premium Spotify account will cost $16.99 monthly for six members. Try sharing the plans with friends and family and dividing the cost. This is still much cheaper than the $10.99 individual plan.
I just went through all of my memberships in January and I couldn’t believe how many things I was paying for that I did not even use OR things that I barely used. I am saving about $50 a month now on this alone. Ugh, I need to keep better track of where my money is going, sigh.
7. Open a high-interest savings account
What can you do with a few extra dollars? Place it in an account to make your money work for you. You can open a checking account online with no deposit if you don’t have a savings account yet.
Many banks and credit unions now offer a variety of high-yield accounts. Some even come with additional perks like no monthly fees and easy online access. This means your money isn’t just sitting idle but actively growing.
Some online banks offer competitive rates compared to traditional brick-and-mortar banks, thanks to lower overhead costs.
Even with moderate balances, the interest accrued in a high-interest savings account can be substantial compared to standard accounts.
Try to have it as your goal to build your emergency fund, offering growth and liquidity. Having funds readily accessible for unexpected expenses can reduce the need to dip into other savings or rely on credit.
Once you have enough savings, try automating them. Many institutions allow you to automate transfers from your checking to your savings account.
Before opening an account:
- Compare options
- Look for accounts with the highest interest rates
- Consider factors like minimum balance requirements, fees, and ease of access to your funds
8. Shop secondhand
Buying secondhand is not only economical but also environmentally friendly and lots of fun! Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online marketplaces are excellent sources for gently used clothing, furniture, and electronics. With patience and effort, you can scavenge high-quality items at a discount all while saving some money.
I love going to the Goodwill or secondhand stores with my two youngest kids. We always find some great deals, and have a lot of fun looking at stuff together!
9. Utilize library resources
Libraries offer many free resources, including books, movies, and digital content. These offerings can save you money on entertainment and educational materials.
Many libraries also offer free workshops, classes, and events that can enrich your life without costing a dime. You can maximize these resources and learn more to earn more.
10. Invest in quality over quantity
While it might seem counterintuitive, spending more on high-quality items that last longer can save money in the long run.
This is particularly true for certain clothing and shoes, appliances, furniture, etc. Cheaply made products may need frequent replacements, whereas durable goods pay for themselves over time.
Saving money is not about depriving yourself but making smarter choices that align with your financial goals. Start with one or two changes from the list above, and gradually implement more as you see results. Your wallet will thank you and soon you will be able to afford a fun family vacation without the stress!
