One of the many challenges parents face is raising a child with disabilities. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Tourette Syndrome, and disorders like learning or language disorders are just some of the known disabilities that can appear in children according to the CDC. One of these disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, is a common motor disability in childhood caused by abnormal development or damage to the brain that affects the child’s muscle control.

While the severity of cerebral palsy does vary, the child’s motor skills are heavily affected which makes it difficult for them to walk or grip things. As parts of the child’s brain have also developed differently, they may sometimes require assistance involving their vision and speech. For parents who want to give the best care and support for their child to ensure their health and happiness, know that there are the right people and professionals who can help parents with that.

The proper medical care

A main medical professional will help plan the proper amount of medical attention and care your child needs. You can consult with either your family doctor or a pediatrician, who can recommend you to additional medical practitioners such as physical therapists, neurologists, audiologists, etc.

It’s also possible that your child may have developed cerebral palsy as a result of medical malpractice, and if you think that this is the case, then you can consult with a lawyer for cerebral palsy malpractice to take legal action. Other legal specialists such as birth injury attorneys can cover cases to aid families who may be struggling with the costs of their child’s disability.

Caregivers and education

You may require the aid of a professional caregiver depending on the condition of your child. However, a family member can be the caregiver for your child provided that the child’s needs do not involve medical assistance. It’s also important that the child’s school has the right special education teachers and professionals which may include a paraprofessional or psychologist to make sure your child receives the proper education and assistance that they need.

Other relevant organizations

There are government services available that can assist you with supporting your child. One of these is through cash assistance, where families can apply for their program if they are qualified. Financial assistance can be beneficial particularly for families with a low income.

Children with cerebral palsy can also be eligible for social security disability benefits, which can either be permanent or temporary depending on the severity of their condition and the program’s duration. Consider also reaching out to organizations or support groups that can help you with raising your child such as Master of Dimes and the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

Part of a parent’s responsibilities for their children involves being able to give them the proper care and support, and children with disabilities are no exception to a parent’s love.

Other than medical professionals, there are various other specialists you can consult with to plan a better future for your child. By knowing the appropriate services that can assist your family, you can provide your child a more comfortable life.
