Who Started Talk Like A Pirate Day?
Hmmmm, who DID start talk like a pirate day? Let’s find out…
Talk Like A Pirate Day was created in 1995 by two friends, John Baur (a.k.a. Ol’ Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (a.k.a. Cap’n Slappy), from Albany, Oregon.
The idea was born during a friendly game of racquetball, where the two started talking in pirate slang for fun. They realized how much they enjoyed it and decided that the world needed an entire day dedicated to speaking like pirates!
Haha! I have to agree with them both, it is kind of fun to talk pirate talk! So, they chose September 19th, simply because it was Summers’ ex-wife’s birthday and easy to remember!
The day started as a private joke between the two friends, but it quickly gained popularity after humorist Dave Barry wrote about it in his nationally syndicated newspaper column in 2002.
Since then, Talk Like A Pirate Day has grown into an international celebration, with people around the world joining in the fun! I love this SO much!
Talk Like A Pirate Day Activities For Kids
Now that we know the origins of this whimsical day, let’s explore some fun activities that kids can do at home or school to celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day!
Pirate Speak Lessons
Teach kids some common pirate phrases like “Ahoy, matey!” (Hello, friend!), “Shiver me timbers!” (Oh my gosh!), and “Walk the plank!” (a classic pirate punishment). Spend the day encouraging them to use these phrases in conversation.
Create Pirate Costumes
Help kids make their own pirate costumes using items from around the house. An old scarf can become a bandana, a cardboard tube can be a telescope, and a piece of cloth can be turned into a sash. Let their imaginations run wild as they dress up like real pirates!
Treasure Hunt
Set up a treasure hunt in your home or backyard. Create a map with clues that lead to hidden “treasure,” such as small toys, candy, or pirate-themed goodies. This activity encourages problem-solving and adds an element of adventure to the day.
We absolutely LOVE these free pirate treasure hunt printables I created a while ago! They are SO popular and now I can see why! They are a lot of fun and help kids get outside (there is one for inside too!) and let’s them go find things!
Pirate Story Time
Gather the kids for a pirate-themed storytime. You can read classic pirate tales like “Treasure Island” or invent your own swashbuckling stories. Encourage the kids to join in by adding their own piratey sound effects and dialogue.
Make Pirate Crafts
Get creative with pirate-themed crafts! Kids can make their own pirate hats, eye patches, or even miniature pirate ships out of paper or cardboard. These crafts can be fun keepsakes to remember the day.
Pirate Snack Attack
Whip up some pirate-inspired snacks! Make “pirate ships” out of apple slices with cheese sails, or create a treasure chest snack box filled with gold (cheese crackers) and jewels (colorful fruit snacks). Let the kids help in the kitchen to add to the fun.
Learn Pirate History
For a more educational spin, teach kids about real-life pirates from history, like Blackbeard or Anne Bonny. Discuss the differences between the real pirates and the ones they see in movies and books.
Pirate-Themed Games
Play classic games with a pirate twist, like “Pin the Patch on the Pirate” or “Musical Islands” (a variation of musical chairs). These games are perfect for a group setting, making them ideal for school celebrations.
PLAYMOBIL Pirate Ship
Ahoy Matey! Are ye ready to celebrate “Talk Like a Pirate Day” on September 19th!?! PLAYMOBIL is – with the launch of its new floating Pirate Ship, just in time for this fun-filled, national happening.
